Acute Hospital and Health System Financial Performance Report

Acute Hospital and Health System Financial Performance Report

DATE: September 27, 2019

The Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) is excited to announce the release of Massachusetts Acute Hospital and Health System Financial Performance for Fiscal Year 2018.

The report presents data for the most recently completed full fiscal year available and analyses of financial performance using five metrics: total margin, operating margin, current ratio, average payment period, and equity financing. It also includes a comparison of the performance of four hospital cohorts (Academic Medical Centers, teaching, community, and community-High Public Payer) on each metric over a five-year period, fiscal years 2014 through 2018.

Key Findings:
  • The statewide acute hospital median total margin was 4.5%, a 1.3 percentage point increase from FY 2017.

  • In 2018, the majority of hospital health systems and hospitals reported a positive total margin.

  • Acute hospitals tended to have greater margins than their associated parent systems.

  • Most hospital health system-affiliated physician organizations reported a financial loss in FY 2018.

For the first time, CHIA is releasing with this report two interactive dashboards containing information on five-year trend analyses for each acute hospital and profiles of hospital health systems. This report is also accompanied by the databook used to calculate these metrics and a technical appendix.
