The Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) has published a comprehensive analysis of Massachusetts hospital performance for Fiscal Year 2019.
Hospital Profiles provide information on acute and non-acute hospitals based on hospital characteristics, services, payer mix, utilization trends, cost trends, financial performance, and quality over a five-year period through FY 2019. These profiles enable comparison against statewide and peer cohorts for each measure. The profiles are also accompanied by an
interactive dashboard for all acute hospitals, allowing users to filter results by individual hospital, hospital type, and hospital health system.
Key Findings:
- Between FY 2018 and FY 2019, statewide hospital inpatient discharges decreased by 0.4%.
- Statewide outpatient visits increased by 3.7% between FY 2018 and FY 2019.
- The acute hospital statewide median total margin was 3.5%, a decrease of 1.0 percentage point between 2018 and 2019. Total margin reflects the excess of total revenues over total expenses.
CHIA today also released Massachusetts hospital health system profiles, which provide a summary of financial performance and relative size of component entities for the hospital health system and their affiliated acute hospitals, physician organizations, and health plans.
