CHIA Releases Interactive FY 2020 Hospital Profiles

CHIA Releases Interactive FY 2020 Hospital Profiles

DATE: April 14, 2022

The Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) today published a comprehensive analysis of Massachusetts hospital performance for Fiscal Year 2020.

Massachusetts Hospital Profiles provide information on acute and non-acute hospitals based on hospital characteristics, financial performance, services, payer mix, utilization trends, cost trends, and quality over a five-year period through FY 2020. These profiles allow comparison against statewide or peer cohorts for each measure. The profiles are also accompanied by an interactive dashboard for all acute hospitals, allowing users to filter results by individual hospital, hospital type, and hospital health system.

The time period covered in this report incorporates the impact of COVID-19 on hospitals during the first year of the pandemic. For most hospitals, Fiscal Year 2020 ran from October 1, 2019 through September 30, 2020.

Key Findings

  • Between FY 2019 and FY 2020, statewide hospital inpatient discharges decreased by 7.5%.

  • The statewide median acute hospital total margin was 2.6%, a 0.9 percentage point decrease from FY 2019, while the statewide median acute hospital operating margin was 1.3%, a 1.2 percentage point decrease from FY 2019.

  • In FY 2020, acute hospitals received $1.9 billion in federal COVID-19 relief funds and $206.8 million in state relief funds to offset lost revenues and increased expenses due to COVID-19. These funds were reported as operating revenue and are included in both the total and operating margins.

CHIA also released Massachusetts hospital health system profiles, which provide a summary of financial performance and relative size of component entities for the hospital health system and their affiliated acute hospitals, physician organizations, and health plans.
